How to start building wealth in 2026

A new study shows 20 million people plan to reorganize their finances this year, with strategies ranging from investing and retirement savings to planning for children’s futures and high-risk opportunities.

Planning personal finances and long-term wealth building

A new year brings a familiar resolution: this is the year to get serious about money. According to recent surveys, some twenty million people across Europe plan to reorganise their finances in 2026 — and most of them will start in the wrong place.

The wrong place is products. The right place is structure. Before choosing any investment, three foundations matter more: an emergency reserve that covers six months of expenses, the elimination of expensive debt, and a clear picture of what the money is actually for.

Only then does investing begin. For most people, the evidence favours boring consistency: regular contributions to diversified, low-cost assets, held through cycles rather than traded around them. Time in the market continues to beat timing it.

For those with the foundations in place and capital beyond them, private markets offer the next step — real assets, private credit, and structured opportunities where illiquidity is compensated rather than feared. This is where disciplined investors separate themselves from savers.

The principles do not change with the calendar: spend less than you earn, invest the difference with intention, and let compounding do the heavy lifting. 2026 is as good a year as any to start — and better than 2027.
